tomatoes as religious objects

Because of the salmonella scare, Whole Foods is now carrying an assortment of heirloom tomatoes.

Yesterday I saw a couple of haggis tomatoes from Central America. They are off white and bear a striking resemblance to a small sheep’s stomach. These are extraordinarily rare because they grow only in Ecuador and only around the city of Guayaquil.

No one knows how they actually came to be called haggis tomatoes being that Ecuador is thousands of miles from Scotland and their cultures have absolutely nothing in common.

They are rarely if ever exported because they are revered as religious objects and frequently given as gifts for special religions occasions.

Praying to them is not at all uncommon (never on the vine) but the occurrence of vegetable worship balloons dramatically as you approach the equator.

You may want to try and grab some. I had only read about them and seen pictures. Don’t buy too many because they actually don’t taste very good.
